Uncovering Your Best Self in Midlife: Rosie Nixon on Burnout, Reinvention & the Power of Pause
The Burnout Wake Up Call That Changed Everything
For many of us, there comes a moment when you realise it’s time to do life differently.
For me, that moment arrived one day in October 2022. I was in my late forties, and life felt full, busy, slightly chaotic. I had been in my role as Editor in Chief of HELLO! magazine for almost fifteen years – a huge stretch of my career – and I was used to running on adrenalin. Breaking news would power me through the week, my days consisted of management meetings, schmoozing industry execs and ensuring we were covering all the hot news stories on the Royal and showbiz beat; For a long time, I lived and breathed the fast, unrelenting pace of journalism and I thrived managing a team.
Yet I woke up on this particular day, and it was as though all the adrenalin had left my body. I had been away from home for two nights hosting a big, glamorous event for the magazine, and when I woke up the following morning, tired and already overwhelmed by the thought of yet another busy day ahead, I noticed missed Facetime calls from my boys, who were then aged 9 and 7, on my phone from the day before. That tipped me over the edge. It was like a visceral pain, I just wanted to be at home with them. I collapsed onto the hotel bed in a pool of tears, unable to just ‘pull myself together’ anymore.
This, it turned out, was the beginning of a slippery slope to burnout. It was now my nervous system’s time to tell me it had had enough and something had to change before I made myself really unwell. I was lucky to have caught things in time and when the doctor signed me off work for a number of weeks to rest and regain my energy, I was forced to pause and reflect on what I wanted this next chapter to be about, and that meant losing the things no longer serving me. Top of that list? Keeping on top of Royal and showbiz news.
Inwardly, I had been desperate for change for a while but, in the busy-ness of daily life, there wasn’t a moment to tune in to that nagging inner voice urging me to start untangling myself from this career and frenetic lifestyle that had become my norm.
I rarely gave myself permission to pause and think deeply about my own needs for long enough.
Looking back, I now see that moment not as a crisis, but as a calling. A big, wild, important, midlife calling, and it was time to sit up and listen.
Redefining Success in Midlife
I spent more than two decades in the media world on magazines including Grazia, Glamour and Red before my long stint at HELLO!; telling stories, shaping narratives, and championing women’s voices. But somewhere between leading teams, raising my boys, moving out of London, and navigating the mental load so many of us carry, I realised I had stopped checking in with myself. I was moving fast, achieving plenty (if you followed me on Instagram you would see my long list of accolades and designer dresses), but rarely pausing long enough to ask: What does ‘success’ mean to me now?
It was as though I was stuck in ‘ON’ mode.
That question 'What does success mean to me now?' became the spark for my reinvention.
And it’s the spark behind the day retreats I now lead, the community I’m building, and the work I feel most called to do: helping women step into their next chapter with confidence, clarity and courage.
Why Women Need Permission to Pause
Women, especially in midlife, are often praised for being capable, admired for holding everything together, but not always supported in carving out space for our own growth.
In fact the concept of a ‘pause’ is so undervalued by society and organisations, we only take notice when our wellbeing is impacted, we tip into burnout or are signed off work with illness.
My work now is about changing that narrative. I am proud to say I listened to that calling, working my way out of HELLO! over a period of two years and training as a life coach, for which I am now qualified, and in 2024 I created Rosie’s Reinvention Retreats.
At Rosie’s Reinvention Retreats, I see women arrive carrying decades of responsibility, experience, wisdom, and often exhaustion. And I watch them leave with a renewed sense of self. A spark. A plan. A belief that their next chapter can be their biggest and boldest yet.
But it has to begin with a pause.
The PRO Method: A Simple Framework for Midlife Reinvention
Reinvent Like A PRO®: How Pause, Reflect, Organise Changed Everything for Me
My reinvention didn’t happen overnight, it unfolded over a number of months through a simple but transformative framework I now teach: The PRO Method – Pause, Reflect, Organise. It is a coaching method rooted in neuroscience and backed by experience. You follow it in this order:
1. Pause
The pause is the most underrated tool we have.
Society rewards speed, productivity, and constant output.
The truth is: meaningful change starts in the pause.
When you stop, even briefly for one long breath out, your nervous system settles. For me, pausing is now a way of life.
For me, pausing now looks like:
- Sleeping without my phone beside the bed
- Starting the morning outdoors rather than on screens
- Running to my favourite ancient yew tree
- Taking grounding breaths before meetings
These tiny rituals help me reconnect with myself and make decisions from a place of calm rather than overwhelm.
2. Reflect
Once you have paused sufficiently, reflection is where you get really curious about where you’re at, why that might be and what matters the most.
Journaling is a great way to do some deep reflection – and I encourage you to meet yourself honestly. Begin by writing down your current emotions, your desires and your fears. Consider ‘What matters the most?’ as you hold yourself in reflection rather than planning mode.
Reflection is where reinvention begins to take shape.
3. Organise
Next comes the part women are brilliant at: turning all that insight into action.
Organise is where your ideas become plans, and plans become steps forward.
Start small – think about what is within your control and would you could do in the next 24 hours, the next week, the next month, and the next year, to move a little closer to your goal.
Consider how you will hold yourself accountable on this journey – by diarising your steps? Telling someone and asking them to check on your plans? It’s the small steps that will transform your goals into your lived reality. Keep going!
I believe in the power of PRO so much I have it engraved on a bracelet I wear permanently to remind me.
I have written a whole book on this subject which will be published on 27th August - pre-order is open now if you are intrigued to learn more and I would be so grateful if you might consider adding it to your basket.

Why NAIA Beach Aligns Perfectly With Reinvention
When Tess and Gayle asked me to write this piece, it felt like a perfect fit because their mission – to help women feel confident, comfortable, and effortlessly themselves – mirrors everything I believe and have come to understand about reinvention.
Reinvention isn’t about becoming someone new. It’s about becoming MORE of the woman you’ve always been.
Their Golden Hour Collection captures the exact energy I want women to feel: radiant, grounded, and beautifully alive in their own skin. Plus their Active line supported me through completing a HYROX earlier this year – one of the most empowering (and sweaty!) experiences of my life.
